Northern Sydney Freight Corridor

Overview

The Northern Sydney Freight Corridor (NSFC) Program is a joint Australian and NSW Government initiative to improve the capacity and reliability of freight trains between Strathfield and Broadmeadow, Newcastle.

The program will increase capacity for interstate container freight and ease the most serious bottleneck on the East Coast interstate, which connects Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.

Stage 1 of the program cost $1 billion and comprised four key projects:

  • Hexham Freight Loop (completed in June 2012)
  • North Strathfield Rail Underpass (completed in June 2015)
  • Gosford Passing Loops (completed in April 2015)
  • Epping to Thornleigh Third Track (completed in June 2016).
